Introduction

The pictures that I have chosen for this blog are some of the most interesting prehistoric animals that I found. To look back at creatures who lived millions and millions of years ago, you will have to understand Geologic Time. Below is a table of the different Eras and Periods that make up Geologic Time. Most of the animals that we will be looking at would have been alive during the late Mesozoic Era.

Tylosaurus



This is the ferocious Tylosaurus. This monster lived in the seas. It reached a length of over 15 meters or 45 feet. It ate everything that was in it's path, but it was mainly carnivorous. The Tylasaurus was ruling the seas during the Upper Cretaceous Period.



Gastornis

This is the Gastroins. A giant bird-like creature that lived 56-40 million years ago. It ate meat and killed it's prey with it's gigantic beak. The Gastronis grew to be over 5 1/2 feet tall. It roamed what is now Europe.

Entelodont

This the Entelodont. This animal is mostly related to a giant pig. The Entelodont stood about 6 feet tall and ate only plants. It lived about 45-25 million years ago in what is now Asia.


Ambulocetus

This is the Ambulocetus. It was named the "walking whale". It lived about 50 million years agi.. The Ambulocetus hunted like an Alligator, waiting in murky water and waiting for unsuspecting prey. The Ambulocetus could walk on land as well as swim.




Dinofelis

This is the Dinofelis. It looks much like a cheetah or leopard that you would see today. It lived about 5-1.4 million years ago and roamed around what is now Africa, North America, Asia and Europe. It's name means "Terrible Cat".

Megatherium

This is the Megatherium. It was alive about 1.9 million years ago to 8,000 years ago. It most resembles a tree sloth. It grew to be almost 20 feet tall! It walked mainly on it's two hind feet.
